Members of the Vanderbilt Department of Anesthesiology are participating in the upcoming Burden of Surgical Disease Working Group (BoSDWG) Meeting, March 10-12, 2010, hosted by the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health and held at the Vanderbilt School of Nursing, Godschaux Hall. Attendees are invited to register for the meeting by the deadline of February 19, 2010.
The Burden of Surgical Disease Working Group (BoSDWG) was founded in 2007 to advocate for surgical intervention within global public health, advance knowledge about the large unmet surgical need in low and middle income countries, encourage evaluation of surgery and reporting of outcomes, and expand the literature on this growing global crisis. Beginning as a grass roots effort of international surgeons, anesthesiologists, public health and metric specialists, economists and humanitarians, the BoSDWG work has grown to include many academic centers and international organizations, including Vanderbilt.
The keynote speaker for the event is the Honorable Senator William Frist, MD. Mark Newton, MD, a Vanderbilt pediatric anesthesiologist and director of the Vanderbilt International Anesthesia (VIA) program, will be participating in a global healthcare workforce panel on “Options for Extending Surgical, Obstetric and Anesthesia Workforces.” He will also be moderating a breakout session on “Global Anesthesia Crisis: Solutions for Low and Middle Income Countries.”
